Authorship

Authorship

The Journal of Agricultural Education considers authorship to be:

  • Significant individual or team scientific contributions to the conceptualization, design, implementation, analysis, and writing/reporting of scholarly work.
  • Active participation in the manuscript development, review, and revision process.
  • Agreement for work to be published.
  • Signed agreement that the work and findings presented are accurate and upholds all scholarly publishing ethics.

Additional authorship guidelines can be found on the APA website.

Author Requirements/Publication Fees

To have a manuscript published, at least one author must be a current member of the American Association for Agricultural Education (AAAE) professional organization. Membership includes active, associate, student, and emeritus status. The editorial team consults the membership directory for every manuscript.

Alternatively, non-AAAE member authors who wish to publish a manuscript in the journal can pay a $500 fee per manuscript to waive the membership requirement. No fee waivers or discounts are available. The publication fee will be initiated after the manuscript moves to the copyediting phase and must be paid prior to publication. Funds received from publication fees are allocated to the publisher, AAAE, to address organizational expenses such as editor stipends and journal website maintenance. Payment should be made to the American Association for Agricultural Education and sent to the AAAE Executive Director at the address found on the JAE Contact webpage

Responsibilities of Authors and Corresponding Author

All authors should review the authorship requirements and agree upon both authorship order and stated contributions. All authors’ contact information will be provided during the submission process and will be published in all accepted manuscripts. All authors are responsible for reviewing the manuscript prior to initial submission and should contribute to and review any revisions requested prior to resubmission, for accepted manuscripts, or for article proofs. All authors are responsible for following the ethical publishing practices outlined in JAE Polices. All authors need to review and sign the Author Publication Agreement Form.

One author should be identified as the submitting author for the submission and review process. Contact information for the submitting author must be provided during the submission process. The submitting author is responsible for communicating with both the Journal of Agricultural Education editorial team and the other authors. The submitting author is responsible for accurately entering all data in the manuscript submission portal and sharing all documents, reviews, and communication provided by the editorial team regarding the submission and publication process with all authors.

One author should be identified as the corresponding author in the published manuscript footnotes. This can but does not have to be the same as the submission and review corresponding author. This author will be identified in the copyediting manuscript and will be responsible for corresponding with researchers regarding questions about the study.

Documenting Author Contributions

Author contributions will not specifically be outlined within the submission process or published manuscript outside of author order. Authors should be listed in order of highest to lowest contribution, with an agreed upon order by all authors.

Acknowledgement of Non-Authors

In instances where contributorship occurs in a manner that does not warrant authorship as outlined in the Authorship guidelines, authors are asked to acknowledge these contributions. Contributions which do not meet the standards of authorship could include, but are not limited to, participant access, data collection materials, funding support, or technical/analysis support. An acknowledgement statement should be created to identify the non-authors and the ways in which they contributed to the work. This acknowledgement statement will be included in the copyediting process within the submitted manuscript. Contributorship will be included in published manuscripts in the Acknowledgement section.

Management of Authorship Disputes

Prior to manuscript submission, all authors should review the Authorship guidelines and engage in scholarly discussions regarding authorship and author order with the author team to reduce potential authorship disputes.

When an authorship dispute does arise, the concerned author(s) should reach out to the JAE Managing Editor to discuss the dispute. Following the initial conversation with the Managing Editor, a formal written complaint should be submitted to the Journal of Agricultural Education Editing-Managing Board Chair. Within the complaint, the following items should be included:

  • Description of the complaint, including the implicated authors
  • Cite specific authorship guidelines that are suspected of being violated, with supporting evidence of the violations
  • Provide any additional documentation as evidence as needed

The formal written complaint will be reviewed by the Journal of Agricultural Education Editing-Managing Board. Any board member who is implicated in the complaint, is an author of the manuscript but not implicated, or is from the same institution as the complainant, implicated authors, or non-implicated authors will be excused from the discussion and vote. The board will review the complaint at a regular board meeting and will need a majority vote to either continue the investigation or dismiss the complaint due to a lack of evidence of author misconduct. If the dispute is continued, the board chair will contact the implicated author(s) to provide a summary of the dispute and request a formal, written response. The board will review the initial dispute and all responses to the dispute. The board will then need another majority vote to accept or dismiss the dispute. If the dispute is dismissed, the board will prepare a formal report to be provided to the complainant.

If a dispute is accepted, the board will determine appropriate action, which could include one or more of the following actions (procedures for these actions are outlined in JAE Policies):

  • Retraction of the article
  • Publication of Letter of Concern
  • Publication of Letter of Correction

Data

The authors retain the rights to the researcher-initiated data collected and analyzed, as published in the manuscripts. Authors are encouraged to disclose when researcher-initiated data are available through repository sites. Data sharing is supported, and authors are encouraged to make their research data available for use by others, provided that doing so will not violate the rights of research participants, compromise privacy, or raise security concerns. Authors must disclose and properly cite secondary data sets used within the manuscript.
