Agricultural organizations support the United States’ agricultural industry in many ways, with some having been established for over 100 years. The 2017 Census of Agriculture has shown growth among minorities in the industry; however, throughout history, these minority groups have often been discriminated against in agriculture. Aligning with the American Association for Agricultural Education (AAAE) research values that emphasize diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, this study examined the role of Ohio agricultural organizations in promoting diversity and inclusion (D&I) and how organizational leaders employed adaptive leadership to address D&I-related challenges. Through a qualitative research approach, researchers conducted semi-structured interviews with board presidents and executive leaders of six agricultural organizations in Ohio. Findings indicate that diversity and inclusion are valued but not prioritized, that there is a lack of official plans in place to address diversity and inclusion within organizations, that gendered barriers affect the work of individuals, that challenges exist in advancing diversity and inclusion work, and that competing commitments hinder the progress of diversity and inclusion efforts. Researchers conclude that while leaders recognize the complexity of diversity and inclusion in society, no current plans are in place within their organizations to address these issues, and multiple barriers hinder this work. To meet the needs of future practice and research, researchers have identified multiple recommendations that could benefit future work on diversity and inclusion within agricultural organizations.
