Abstract

Agricultural communications programs have repeatedly reinvented themselves alongside major media and technology shifts, yet the accelerating convergence of artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, and data-intensive decision-making signals a qualitatively different transition. This conceptual/commentary manuscript frames the field’s evolution for Agricultural Communications 1.0 (print-based agricultural journalism), 2.0 (broadcast expansion and strategic messaging), and 3.0 (digital-first, social media–driven engagement), and argues that we are entering Agricultural Communications 4.0. Ag Comm 4.0 is defined not as incremental curricular updating but as systemic reconfiguration requiring the realignment curricula, faculty capacity, and industry partnerships to communicate credibly within AI-enabled, sensor-rich agricultural systems and increasingly fragmented media environments. Key drivers for Ag Comm 4.0 include automation of routine communication tasks, real-time analytics and personalization, heightened misinformation and trust erosion, shifting supply-chain and workforce pressures, and the learning preferences and skill gaps of Generation Z students. The manuscript concludes that most programs are not yet collectively ready for this shift and outlines priority actions: (a) modernizing curricula around AI literacy, ethics, data-informed storytelling, and principles-based instruction; (b) expanding faculty development beyond tool training; and (c) strengthening experiential learning and partnerships to keep pace with rapid technological change while safeguarding accuracy and public trust.
